A Generous Community

Today, I wrapped up all my “official” business at the church. It’s a weird feeling—a little disorienting.

It was a fitting ending, though. My last activity was a final session with our Tuesday morning study group, known as the Eye Openers. I’ve led this group for over two years now, and it’s truly been one of the highlights of my week. I appreciate all the people who are willing to come at 8:00 a.m. to think deeply and critically! My kind of people!

What I have appreciated most about this group is that it is a highly diverse group, in terms of perspectives on any given issue. There has not been a topic that we have broached that has not divided the room. Yet every week, we end by joining hands and sharing a benediction.

This reflects the nature of the group: it is one marked by its generosity and humility. It has been a safe space for people to voice their questions and thoughts.

I’ll miss this group especially. I wish you all the best of luck. May all be so lucky as to find such a supportive community.
